Im going to start uni soon and need a laptop.

I know how to build a PC but not buy a laptop (stupid i know)

So Im looking kinda light and okay on specs.

Im looking to spend about 1300 USD and anything really goes i just want a bigger picture because i dont really follow the laptop scene (at all).

Good note is im from Denmark so its not all products i can get.

What are you going to use your laptop for? Office/ research, simulations, CAD?

Which screen size do you prefer (13.3 inches (very portable), 14 inches (good compromise between portability and screen real estate) or 15.6 inches (doable, but rather on the large side if you ask me). If you don't know what size fits you best, from my experience 14 inches is a good size).

So office research, im not expecting to be running any kind of simulations or heavy load work(just alot of chrome tabs).

screen size im thinking 14 maybe 15 i like me screens abit bigger. (Im nearsighted and sometimes take my glasses off)

In that case I'd recommend a 15.x inches screen size. The best thing would be to take a look at a 14" and a 15.6" screen in person at your nearest electronics dealer.

As your budget is 1300 USD, I'd try to get in to the direction of a business laptop. These are, while more expensive, of a much better build quality and will last you several years.

That said, to be powerful enough for future projects I'd recommend 8 GB of RAM (minimum) or 16 GB if the RAM is soldered and you don't have the possibility to upgrade later down the road.

As for storage, you know best yourself what you need. I found 500 GB to be pretty good (I use a desktop PC and have a laptop for when I'm on the go, so probably similar to what you're planning to do).

Processor wise, the choice is up to you whether you want to go with Intel or AMD. AMD laptops tend to be a bit cheaper, but as the 4000 series of mobile APUs just launched, I'd probably wait a bit (if you can) until you find them in more laptops. Otherwise go with a Ryzen 7 3xxxU CPU, should you decide to go with AMD. Intel on the other hand is not bad either. An i5 should cover you well, an i7 is nice to have if you want to spend the money but not crucial in my opinion.

As long as you don't plan on doing gaming you should be good to go with the integrated graphics of your CPU.

For the screen resolution I personally think 1080p is completely enough on a laptop (driving fewer pixels => less power consumption).

Brand wise the choice is up to you. Lenovo makes good laptops (the T series especially), Dell and HP (with their respective business lineups) are good choices as well. Just take a look at the websites of these manufacturers to look for a model you like.

Some companies also offer discounts for students.

I hope this sheds some light on the laptop segment :)
