How does Samsung’s “Rapid Mode” work on SSDs?

GamerBlake

Like my 860 QVO & 860 Evo both allow me to enable “Rapid Mode” (but not both at the same time), and when I do it my SSD benchmark speeds rise drastically (up to 10GB/s R/W) but what exactly does it DO to the SSD that is causing the speed boost?

Doesn't it have a description of what it does right there when you go to activate it?

You could also easily just google this.

TLDR: It's an idiotproof RAM cache.

Not really it just says “Enable Rapid Mode and maximize your drive’s performance.”

I knew it did something with RAM to go faster but I didn’t know what.

It's just user-configurable caching.

QUOTE ME IN A REPLY SO I CAN SEE THE NOTIFICATION!

When there is no danger of failure there is no pleasure in success.

it's RAM caching. The one time I tried it, the benches were impressive but I couldn't see any real life improvements.

As long as anyone is oppressed, no one will be safe and free.

One has to be proactive, not reactive, to ensure the safety of one's data so backup your data! And RAID is NOT a backup!

Oh ok so basically If I leave it off I’m not really sacrificing much if any performance?

I just figured I’d ask because I’ve had it off since I got the ssd as it was performing well without it but I didn’t want to give up free performance and feel stupid about it later.

Besides turning it on and off, there's no configuration options.

Free performance is free performance.  If you have the RAM to spare (it uses 1GB? maybe 2, can't remember), I don't see a reason to leave it off unless there's some sort of compatibility issue you're running into.

That said, I can't say I've noticed a difference either way, but I've not actually done extensive testing.
