I'm tossing around the idea of selling both of my servers and building a new AM4 system to take their place while also being my main machine.  This is what a friend of mine did and I'm liking the idea.

Plan is to end up with 30+TB of storage after the lost drive in raid5 (thinking 5x8tb)

Ryzen 9 3900x

32gb ram 3600+

1tb nvme gen4

rtx 2080super

maybe air cooled, maybe aio

have a spare 850w seasonic gold psu

I'm going to need to find a case that I like, needs to have tempered glass (be quiet make good cases, like the phanteks too but open to anything that looks good)

I threw together a quick build of about $3k which after selling my servers and drives should be doable.  Just thought I'd see what everyone thinks for a build while I ponder this move

Prefer Asus mb's

Light OC will be done, not going to push hard

want a color matched build too

Server just does Plex

Audio go Brrrrrr

 about $3k

Yes, seems spot-on. Don't bother with PCIe 4.0 SSDs tho.

*edit: oh for some reason I didn't go WD red this recent time, went with wd ultrastar's

I might shuck and mod external's and save $350

Oh, Hitachi \ Toshiba drives are LOUD, you were warned :)

Yarrrr, my entire office/computer room is loud.  Got a fishtank and two servers so it doesn't bother me, I kind of like background noise.  One of my server's are toshiba. (my edit realized that they're WD's not hgst but at one point I was going hgst and another point toshiba, I'll narrow that down)

Audio go Brrrrrr

HGST and Toshiba drives are nearly identical anyway tho. When WD bought Hitachi, regulators demanded that they'll sell some factories to Toshiba so they make the same drives as Hitachi ones essentially, and from 2018 HGST brand are defunct, their drives are marketed under WD now (Deskstar, Ultrastar).

I just stumbled across a great solution..........

https://www.newegg.com/galaxy-silver-phanteks-evolv-x-atx-mid-tower/p/N82E16811854079?Item=N82E16811854079

Then I can stick with my 8x4tb setup and I don't have to buy new drives and sell old ones

Audio go Brrrrrr
