Hi so I'm planning to do a DIY external SSD enclosure. I'll be using a WD Green 480GB SSD and an Orico USB 3.0 2.5" enclosure. How much of a loss am I getting with it on an enclosure? I'm planning to edit videos off of it plugged in a USB 3.0 dock so I can also use my laptop to edit the files on the go (PC to Laptop if I need to go workflow). Any thoughts on this? Any enclosures that you recommend that can get me closer to the advertised read and write speeds of the SSD?

Question #2: Are the real world read and write speeds of USB 3.0 enough for video editing? I'll mainly edit 4K footage from Sony A6300

Thanks!

No problem, you're going to get about 350MB/s through USB3.

You will get a performance bottle neck through the USB. USB 3.0 is up to 5.0 Gbps but most USB ports will not run that fast, depending on the port and the machine it is on. If you need more speed, you would need to install the SSD inside the computer and connect it to a SATA 6.0 Gbps port. If you need for it to be external, try to install a trayless 2.5" hot swap bay in the computer that is connected to a hot swappable SATA 6.0 Gbps port and just use the SSD bare with no enclosure.

I've used both external enclosures and hotswap bays and the ones in the external enclosures are noticeably slower though not by a huge amount. Still, there are situations when the external enclosures are more practical and the hotswap bays are more practical so I use both.
