I just wanna know guys. Why Intel named their 2010 micro-architecture 1st gen, while actually they have produced quite a lot of CPU micro-architectures before 2010? Shouldn't they name their first CPU micro-architecture ever the "1st gen"?

I'm guessing there is a major difference between the micro-architectures before and after they called it "generations".

Thanks guys!

You're guessing it right.

They never officially call that "1st gen". The xxx gen name is only used since Sandy Bridge (2nd gen) in relation to their new naming scheme of having the very first number as the generation number that's in use since then. We just call Bloomfield, Lynnfield, Clarkdale and Gulftown first gen because they use the ix-xxx naming scheme first unlike the older Core 2's E/Q/X[number] or Pentium's [number] [frequency] naming scheme. Notice how 1st gen CPUs lack the leading 1 if they were planned to be called this way from the start.

In other words, xxx gen is referring to xxx gen of CPUs with this naming scheme more than anything else.
