Hello Guys,

I plan to build me an perfect setup for my needs. It can be more than one PC and i am absolutely free for the OS.

At this moment i have 2 systems running Ryzen 5 2600x, one heavy system for Gaming and another one running as an VMware Host/NAS. On the Host i plan to build a gaming system which i can use by remote and there must be an NAS solution like freenas running too. So i need a host OS for NAS features and running different VMs. Also i need some advice because i am looking for a powerful Laptop that doesn't have to be able to game but must have some power for programming and virtualization.

1. So what OS should i use on the Host?

2. What CPU from AMD *.* should I use for the Host with money on my mind?

3. Dual CPU system?

4. It would be nice if there is a way to share the mouse, keyboard and monitor for one of the system through LAN/Ethernet without blocking the LAN cable?

5. Can i Plug my peripherals direct to the Host system?

6. If i do so can i switch through the VMs?

7. Which Laptop to use when i am on a Budget?

Feel free to give some advice in any kind of way.

Greetings.

The host system sort of sounds like a job for Linux.  BSD has its points but it’s kind of living of OSX scraps atm and is having a bit of trouble keeping up. Windows also has its points but costs money and it’s only a shell OS.  OSX has more better points because it’s a full modern BSD but you run into big hardware roadblocks. As to which Linux distro   I’m out of that loop.  I understand there are distros built specifically for running a windows gaming virtualization inside them.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Okay thanks, i thought i would give unraid or FreeNAS another try the seem to be my best options so far. The host system should not only be for Gaming i like to run multiple VMs, there should be a NAS some different Distribution system and some testing VMs.
