So I get scraps from friends and family for computer parts. My rig was a server motherboard. I found a alienware Aurora r3 for $20usd and changed my hdd, ram, gpu into it. I want to upgrade the cpu lga 1366 from a i7 920. But need suggestions if I should get a newer motherboard and find a cheap matching cpu

You'll definitely need a new motherboard and ram to run anything modern.

What to depends on what you want to spend

I plan to get everything second hand 2/3 years old. I've been able to run everything I've thrown at my computer. The newest thing I've played is 2016 DOOM

Why 1366 though? Anything from that socket won't be much of an upgrade. Ryzen is extremely easy to jump on to

@RetroOrc What all are you doing? If you're on a low budget but still have a good cooler, a well tuned X5670 + OCed RAM is solid. Used to be able to aaalmost match a stock R5 1600, but vulnerability fixes nerfed it a bit. If you already have a good mobo and such though then it's worth a shot if you're down to fiddle around with OCing it, but it can be temperamental (my boards have decided they don't like me lately).

If you want something newer, used Ryzen is solid, or if you wanna stick with Intel X chipsets, whichever of X79 or X99 you can get the cheapest decent board on (they perform a bit better than Zen and Zen+ once OCed, but don't have any real options above 8 cores).

I'm not wanting to stick with 1366. Unless there is a cheaper way to get a  i7 2600k. I'm just trying to get a decent jump for as cheap as I can. I'm working on two computers at the moment.

2600K is mainstream, that's on a different socket. LGA1155 IIRC, if you can get one for a decent price then they're solid chips for their age. If you're trying for the most decent jump for the least money, look into a used Ryzen R5 1600 or R5 2600. They're on par with/slightly faster than a Haswell-E chip at the same clocks if you give them snappy RAM (up to 2933Mhz for most Zen setups, 3200Mhz is usually best for Zen+). If people are upgrading to Zen 2 they'll likely dump the chips for a good price, and B450 boards are pretty dang cheap, plus DDR4 prices have come down a lot. If you get a bit better of a board, it leaves you the option to hop up to a higher end Zen 2 chip in a couple years, once people start upgrading from those.

Oooooo see that's why I came here. I'll have to double check but I thought that was compatible because of another old site. :)

Lol yee, doesn't help that Intel has always had pretty similar names for all their CPUs. Seen people think a 4390K (LGA2011 HEDT chip) was compatible with the same mobos as a 4790K (LGA1151 mainstream chip) because they have the same naming scheme.
