connection through ethernet doesn't work(limited)

2 days ago my ethernet connection was just fine. i just got on my laptop and it said unidentified network (limited). my wifi is still working though. i've searched all over the internet for a solution but couldn't find anything helpful for my problem.

i've unplugged the ethernet cable and put it in another device and it works over there. i put it back into my laptop and it didn't work. i unplugged an replugged the modem but no effect. disabled and enabled my ethernet driver. made a change in netTCIP.inf but no effect. can someone please help me? trying to install windows 8.1 now and see if that works.

if i do problem solving on windows it tells me:

ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration.

Did you try Windows Troubleshooting? That thing actually does a pretty good job at fixing common problems.

Simply right-click on the network icon on the notification tray, and select "Troubleshoot problems".

i did and it says my ehternet doesn't have a valid ip configuration

Is your IP configuration on Static IP? If so change it back to Dynamic (DHCP) IP.

i set it to static after i got this problem. so that isn't the solution.
