Planetside 2 Launcher Problems?

I am a huge fan of the MMOFPS Planetside 2 but I have had one major problem with the game, the launcher. The Steam download took about two hours to complete but on the other hand the much smaller update once I open the launcher can take up to 30 minutes for a 1GB. Aside from the slow download speeds the launcher seems to kill my laptops performance while its updating. Does anyone know what causes this problem or a way to fix it?
