PC shuts off under high load

Hi guys,

I am looking for help diagnosing the following system.

specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600x

MB: Asus Prime X370 Pro

RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200MHz

GPU: 2x Nvidia GTX 1080Ti

PSU: Kolink KL-1000M 1000W

 

I am experiencing the following behavior: Under high system load the PC shuts off. The easiest way to reproduce this is to run a game with SLI. It does not always happen immediately but it usually happens after 10-20 minutes. This also happens with non SLI loads such as training of a neural network. It is also not OS specific as it happens on Windows and Linux.

When the system shuts off the motherboard seems to still be powered as LEDs in connected USB devices and on the the motherboard are still on. However when i try to restart the system it does not turn on (even if i wait for 30 minutes). The only way to get it to work again is to cut the power to the power supply and wait a couple seconds until the charge is gone (all LEDs off). If i then reconnect the power supply i can start the computer normally.  

Initially i was suspecting this to be a thermals issue. However i used OpenHardwareMonitors's logging feature to get the temps right before the shutdown and those look fine to me. The hottest core reaches 43°C, while the GPUs are both at 80°C. 

I thought it might be a PSU issue but according to the GPU's specification the maximum power usage is 250W. So 500W in total and the 12V rail is rated for 840W. So that should be fine, right?

Any ideas on what the problem may be or how to continue diagnosing this behavior?

It's PSU or motherboard that goes into protection mode. It's not clear if you've tried to run these GPUs one by one to check if it's one of the GPUs that's faulty or if it shuts down only with two GPUs. If that's the case and it still shuts down with single GPU then if you have any relatively good PSU lying around try to test it with just one GPU.

With some higher wattage power supplies from not as-reputable brands they sometimes dont have the high wattage they advertize

I tested again with each card individually and could not reproduce the problem. It only happens with both cards together.
Is there a way to find out whether its the motherboard or the psu that is triggering the protection mode?

Could be...But i would prefer to make sure it is actually the psu that's failing before i buy a new one (from a reputable brand )

Well, i'd cautiously say that it most probably a PSU issue then. Are there any local PC parts store where you could've loaned a good open-box PSU to test your system with ?

i was kind of busy with other stuff. 

Last week i got a new psu (from a reputable brand) and now everything is stable. Thanks everyone for the input!
