Advice for higher end setup

PhanZ

I used to have two 12 inch subs in my car and I miss the bass, so I have decided to look into getting a nice sound system for my PC as I currently have some cheap $30 speakers for it. I am new to setting up a higher end audio setup so I figured might as well get some advice before doing something I will regret if I mess up

I have a x99 deluxe motherboard so my plan was to use a optical cable since it has a optical audio port why not use it: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NH11H38/?coliid=I1U6ZX70B41XNG&colid=3PXI2A0PIPQ2X&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

plugged into these speakers: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017E152K0/?coliid=I3QLK1Q1Y36GBC&colid=3PXI2A0PIPQ2X&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

and then add on this sub: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IE5MOUM/?coliid=I224WO45G5WRBD&colid=3PXI2A0PIPQ2X&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

the reviews seem good on these products, Is this a good setup? is it doable with the ports / cables provided? do I have to do anything special to add in the sub? am I wasting my money? (as long as the speakers and sub are each less than 1k I am okay)

Never ask about “good” to audiophiles.  The answer will always be “not good enough”.  There is no “enough”.  You’ll wind up beggaring yourself on exotic systems.

You like it or you don’t.  No one else’s opinion matters.  No one else is listening.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

I have audited those speakers and while they are lovely, their nearfield performance isn't really good, which means they'll need space. Space in the back to breathe and space between you and them for them to sound their best. If space is an issue I'll recommend nearfield monitors or something like the KEF LSX, Dynaudio Xeo 2, Dynaudio Lyd 5, or even the smaller Audioengine HD3.

Nothing much to say about the sub though, SVS stuff is pretty solid, so that's a good choice. I would've gone for that sub if my room was so tiny.

Also i would recommend you audit a few brands at local retailers if at all possible, most brands will have a certain signature to their sound, that will give you a good eatimate of what kind of sound you like.

main reason for HD6 over HD3 would be optical input, as I want to take advantage of it existing on my motherboard

Like @vogelspinnen said, the KEF LSX are extremely good. Never seen any negative reviews, Beautiful, Sound great, Nice and small, and come with KEF's customer support, which is generally really good.

Main speaker setup is now;

Mini DSP SHD Studio -> 2x Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC's (fed by AES/EBU, one feeds the left sub and main, the other feeds the right side) -> 2x Neumann KH420 + 2x Neumann KH870

(Having a totally seperate DAC for each channel is game changing for sound quality)

To be honest, I would grab a Rythmik sub, such as the FVX12, which will give you similar output, better low frequency response and much better accuracy. http://www.rythmikaudio.com/FVX12.html

Then for the mains, something such as the KEF LS50, which are currently 400 dollars off at bestbuy https://www.bestbuy.com/site/kef-ls50-5-1-4-2-way-studio-monitors-pair-high-gloss-piano-white/5838542.p?skuId=5838542

Then obviously they need an amp, such as the Pioneer SX-10AE, which has plenty of power, connectivity, and of course a subwoofer pre out. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/pioneer-2-0-ch-stereo-receiver-black/6150411.p?skuId=6150411

Then you buy a subwoofer cable, and a pair of speaker cables to connect it all
