Raid 0 question.

Im having an argument with my dad here so can some expert explain this to me?

If I have 2 120GB SSD's. And put them into RAID 0, then I will have one drive that is 240GB and double speed right?

And then if I partition that drive back into 2 120GB (so I can have C:\ 120GB and D:\ 120GB)

Will I then still have the double speed but have 2 drives to have OS on one and other things on other?

 

It's like you said. Double the speed for both partitions. But still double the failure rate. 128 gigs isn't much space, i wouldn't partition that 240 drive. However what you plan, would work out.

the way this double speed works, is that your files are halved, so that one half can be stored on each drive so you can achieve ''double speed'' if you devide them in C: and D: than your files are no longer halved so you get regular speed. 

still very fast speed, with ssd's

You are right. Windows doesn't know that the drive actually consists of two sub-drives. You will end up with half of each partition on one of the drives. If one drive fails, both partitions are gone.

if you have them in raid 0 it should show up as 1 drive and if you partition part of that it should have double speed i think. 

but i'm not an expert

Sweet, alright now I got that sorted out. But btw, should I even do that?

Or would you recommend me to not do it because i'll have double the chance of one of em failing and me loosing the files from both.

Partitioning =/= splitting the drives apart again. What he's proposing is combining the two 120GB drives into a single 240GB RAID 0 volume, and then partitioning that volume into two 120GB sections but they will still be a RAID 0 volume.

In RAID 0, if you lose 1 drive u lose all the data, and chances are you won't be able to recover that. If you're not dealing with anything important (like, just the OS and some Steam games) RAID 0 can make sense, but if you'd be losing anything irreplaceable it's not recommended. As for partitioning the RAID 0 volume, I don't see much of a reason why you would...
