Hi everyone!
The PC (Motherboard/CPU) from my brother broke down and I would like to help him in deciding which parts he should buy to upgrade.

He has:

- GTX 1060

- 1080p Monitor (would like to upgrade to 1440p at some point next year)

- relatively new BeQuiet 450W PSU

As either the motherboard or CPU died (both were very old) I am looking for a new Motherboard & CPU & RAM for him.

He is not a professional/competitive gamer but does enjoy playing his favorite games. He doesn't do any video editing

or professional stuff and is not running a lot of things in parallel. Most of the time he is playing his games and listening

to music. As far as I can tell, I would say that the core count/parallel performance isn't that important.

His favorite games are:
- Skyrim (only with some minor mods)

- Dead Island 2

- For Honor

And he is also looking forward to playing

- Destiny 2: Shadowkeep

Which seems to be a huge game with 165GB.

I was thinking of giving him an 1TB SSD for christmas, as he only had an SSHD. But if the games are that big I don't know

if maybe an Intel Optane stick would make sense...

I am living in germany, so if anyone wants to go the extra mile amazon.de would be the primary choice. :)

The budget is kinda flexible, with the goal of hitting a price to performance sweet spot, given his "basic" needs.

I only use PCs for work-related things and hope that I can get valuable "gamer" information from you guys. :)

So working backwards I first looked for RAM:

RAM - Simply because it is a 16GB stick for future upgrades if necessary (72 Euro)

Now for the big question... What CPU and motherboard should we buy?

Here I am thinking about the Intel Core i5-8400 for 225 Euro or the Ryzen 5 3600 for 250 Euro.
I haven't looked for specific motherboards yet, as I don't know if the components are a good choice to begin with.

The motherboard could be rather simple, as I can't think of any "important" features that he needs.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

PS: I hope a new thread is fine.

I would go for a ryzen 2600 or 3600 with a msi b450 motherboard and 2x8gb ram kit (3000MHz +). even the 2600 is better than the intel 8400.

You didn't say if you want to keep your current case or not so i included one.

If you think that 2TB SSD would be too expensive then get Corsair MP510 1TB.

Wow, these are some very fast replies! :D
So the Ryzen 5 3600X seems to be a fitting choice?

Would you say that this is a good price to performance compromise?

The B450 motherboard looks like a good choice.

I forgot to mention that he has a Noctua NH-D15 cooler, so we would only need to buy fitting mounting brackets

(like this one). Or are there any problems known with these mounting brackets?

This is the current setup I have in mind.

I would like to avoid updating the BIOS as we don't have a CPU lying around, so I may get a list of possible mobos and see if one of them will be on sale.

Case is a good question. He does have one, but it is pretty beat up, so thanks for including it!

Why do you prefer the Corsair MP510 1TB? Because it has higher read/write speeds?

Just get the 3600 and overclock it to 3600x levels.

The Tomahawk Max from MSI is ready for 3rd gen Ryzen.

Ok, that seems like a reasonable choice.

I really like the motherboard!

So I've included the 2TB NVME drive, but I will see if it will be on sale.

This is the current version:
