Hello, I would like to get some advice on PC upgrades. I originally built my PC 5+ years ago and it's a bit of a mixed bag, because some things have been replaced and some haven't. I play a lot of different games but the heavier ones I frequent are Rainbow Six Siege, Mordhau, Dark Souls 3 for example. I live in Germany. My budget is yet to be determined, because I'm a student who only makes enough money to cover his monthly expenses (excluding rent) and need to talk to my parents about it. I'd like to know though what upgrades would result in the biggest improvements. Here's my build:

  • Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Pro4
  • PSU: FSP Raider 750
  • CPU: Intel i7-3770 (non K)
  • GPU: Gigabyte Windforce (3xFan) GTX970
  • RAM: Evo Corsa GeIL 2x4GB DDR3-1866MHz
  • SSD: Intel 330 Series 120 GB (SSDSC2CT120A3) + Samsung Evo 850 500GB
  • HDD: Western Digital Green WD20EARX 2TB, 5400RPM, 64MB cache
  • Case: Cooler Master Silencio 550
  • Cooling: 2 Cooler Master case fans (the ones that come with the case I believe), Hyper Evo 212 for the CPU but with a Noctua NF-P12 redux fan because the original Cooler Master one wasn't working properly after a while (probably the bearings).
  • Monitor: Samsung 24" S24B350H, 1920x1080, LED, 60Hz

Thank you very much in advance.

I'm under the impression that the GPU is not my top priority, because I'm still able to play at decent graphics settings and get 100+ FPS. From I understand though the other three you named are quite old and would probably go hand in hand as upgrades. Is that correct?

Anything in particular you'd recommend? Let's say I have a budget of about 400-500 euros for CPU, Mobo and RAM just so that you have some sort of a reference point.

I found the 3600x for about 20 euros more right now which I'm assuming is worth it right?

What about B450 Pro Carbon AC for 128€?

The cooler is a little better and it has an higher clock so for 20€ why not.

As good for more and you'll need to flash bios (it doesn't come Zen 2 ready).

Alright. Now I'm getting advice in a bit of a different direction namely that GPU is more worth it as an upgrade especially for gaming. If I go for that theoretically I guess I'm looking at rx5700/xt, 2060, 2070/2070super. Rx5700 and the xt version are similarly priced with the latter being about 390€. Is the roughly 150€ price difference worth it for 2070 or 2070super?

For the same price the 5700XT is better than the 2060S, the 2070S is better than the 5700Xt but spending 150€ is up to you, personally I don't think that 150€ justify a 5-10% better FPS in game.

I agree. I'll wait for Black Friday/Cyber Monday and if I see a good deal I'll probably jump on it. If not I can wait a bit longer. I'm not in that big of a rush to upgrade - mainly wanted to know what my options are. Thank you for your help

Quick question. How much of a problem would all of my older parts like mobo and CPU be if I got a 5700XT? Would they be too much of a bottleneck?

They will bottleneck but it would still be way better than yout GTX970.

Thank you. I've been watching videos and benchmarks and it seems that the Gigabyte Gaming OC 5700xt or the Powercolor Red Dragon (a bit cheaper) both have good cooling and are mostly quieter than the other custom models so they look like good choices to me if I want to go with a new GPU.
