Everything on my desktop is gone

I just removed a hard drive that had nothing on it except files I have never used in a long time, so I decided to shut down my pc and take the hard drive out. When I started my pc up again, everything on my desktop was gone. How can I fix this?

Everything including trash icon? Right mouse button on desktop and enable show desktop icons.
