I am working on putting together my first true solo build and would like some advice on if the parts I'm choosing make sense. I have been gaming off a laptop and am looking to move back to a desktop. My budget for the build is $2000 USD for the tower. This isn't a set amount, I'm will to go over if it makes sense. My use for this will mostly be for gaming, including basically everything from FPSs to Minecraft. I don't have any real plans at the moment for things like streaming or VR, but would like to have some amount of potential there should I choose to in the future. While I don't plan on doing much right now, I plan on doing some overclocking. I will likely go for a 2 monitor setup, unlikely to go more than that.

CPU: Intel i9-9700K

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition

MB: ASUS ROG Strix Z390-F Gaming

Graphics: MSI RTX 2080 Super Gaming X TRIO

Ram: G.Skill TridentZ RGB 16GB (2x8) DDR4 3200

Storage: Intel 660p Series M.2 2280 1TB

PSU: Corsair RM750x

Case: Cougar Panzer Evo ATX Full Tower

My estimate is this will be about $1900. I know that I could go a bit cheaper if I didn't do so much RGB, but I like the look. When I get around to overclocking and other mods I will move to liquid cooled, but for now I'm just trying to get me something that will play the newest games at the highest or just shy of the highest settings. I appreciate any input you can give me.

  • For a $2000 build, spend more than $30 on a cooler. You don't need more than a D15 for a lot of overclocking, and it's only a little over twice the price.
  • I'd look at the SX8200 Pro. Performance is basically on par with a 970 EVO.
  • PSU is a little overkill but if it's the same price it's fine.
  • Wait for Black Friday.

The cup cooler is not a good pairing with the I7-9700K. An NH-D15 or Dark Rock Pro 4 are much better choices that will offer a fair bit of overclocking potential.

If you want RGB on the gpu, consider going with an Asus model so that it can be synchronized with the motherboard and memory lighting.

The case fans are LED. You might consider cases with Aura Sync compatible RGB fans. Alternatively, you could consider case without lit fans, relying on the interior components for lighting.

I'd suggest using pcpartpicker.com for assembling and posting builds. Much easier for others to verify selections and consider alternatives.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
