Needing a little help/advise with getting gigabit speed with my home network.

First off I have one the annoying all one modem routers from my isp its a ZyXel, Model Number VSG1432.

Cat6 run from router to main pc and cat6 run from router to laptop in living room.

i have gone into device settings for network adapters and manually set speed and duplex to 1gbps full duplex on both machines  (just in case)

but am not getting much over 90 mbps using lan speed test lite.

i had success using a cross over cable just to test the network adapters.

so i am left glaring at this ZyXel unit.

whats my next move helpful people? thanks in advance.

this all became important suddenly as i got the steam in home streaming beta email this morning

Ask your ISP if there's any restrictions on modems you use. If they give you PPP credentials then the answer is no immediately, then get a new one.

Even if you tell your computer to use 1000Mbps full duplex, and you're on a 100Mbps port, then you ain't getting Gigabit.

Your best bet is to either add a Gigabit switch to your network, or ask your ISP to put your modem/router into Bridge mode and buy your own Gigabit router.

The Gigabit Switch would simply add more ports to the router, but being gigabit you would be able to transfer at gigabit speeds. This is because the modem/router would assign the IP addresses to devices on the switch, and the data would then pass directly through the switch from computer to computer at gigabit speeds. This is not the best option, especially if you're trying to improve wireless speeds, as the signal for wireless still has to travel through the modem/router, but it would attain gigabit wired speed for you.

Adding your own Gigabit Router, such as the ASUS RT-N66U or RT-AC66U, or a comparable model, would be the best option, as you'd be essentially bypassing the modem/router altogether. Bridge mode lets the coax/telephone connection pass directly through the modem, turning off the router feature, and allowing your router to manage the distribution and data transfers, thus not only achieving gigabit speeds, but probably providing better overall performance, especially if you've got a lot of devices on the network.

Let me know if I can answer anything else @lacky :D

Thanks for the answers.

Currently mostly concerned with my wired speed and also on a budget so i think a switch will have to do.

anything i should be looking for in a basic switch as far as features go?

how does this on look?
