Will it be compatible?

I'm looking to upgrade the CPU in my pc and I wanted to make sure it's compatible before I buy it. The PC itself is a custom built I bought off eBay.

It's really confusing to me because when I look up the CPU that is currently in use in my motherboard is a i5-3470 and when I look up the socket type for this on google, it says it "sockets supported: FCLGA1155"

Link for this https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/68316/intel-core-i5-3470-processor-6m-cache-up-to-3-60-ghz.html

When I look online at the manual for my PC model, which is HP PRO 6300 SFF, it says the processor socket is a "Intel LGA775 processor socket" http://static.highspeedbackbone.net/pdf/HP Compaq Pro 6300 Series Business PC Quick Specs.pdf

The CPU I want to upgrade to is a i7-4790 and it says it uses a FCLGA1155 socket, which is the same socket that my current CPU uses. Maybe it's not the stock original motherboard?

Does it makes sense that if my current processor uses a FCLGA1155 socket that I could buy any processor with that socket?

Something does not add up. Can someone help me with this? I don't want to buy the i7-4790 and then have to return it, pay for shipping etc.

Here is a screenshot of my mother board specs

That PC has a B75 Chipset and support these 1155 CPUs:

Intel 3rd generation core i7 processors:

Intel Core i7-3770 processor:

Intel 3rd generation core i5 processors:

Intel Core i5-3570 processor

Intel Core i5-3470 processor

Intel 2nd generation core i3 processors:

Intel Core i3-2130 processor

Intel Core i3-2120 processor

Intel Pentium processors:

Intel PentiumG870 processor

Intel PentiumG860 processor

Intel PentiumG640 processor

Intel Celeron processors:

Intel Celeron G550 processor

Intel Celeron G540 processor

Intel Celeron G460 processor
https://support.hp.com/ro-en/document/c03387773

B75 chipset only supports Gen 2 (iX - 2XXX) or gen 3 (iX-3XXX) cpus.

So the highest it can support is the i7-3770 (listed above) or you can find list of compatible cpu here:

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/64030/intel-b75-express-chipset.html

Now for the 4th gen, you need an 8th generation chipset (x8x)

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/80806/intel-core-i7-4790-processor-8m-cache-up-to-4-00-ghz.html

So even-though it has the same socket 1155, the i7  4790 cannot run in your PC.

For the socket 775 mentioned in the manual, i guess it's an outdated information (copy paste galore), companies as big as HP can make mistakes sometimes.

Ryzen 5700g @ 4.4ghz all cores | Asrock B550M Steel Legend | 3060 | 2x 16gb Micron E 2666 @ 4200mhz cl16 | 500gb WD SN750 | 12 TB HDD | Deepcool Gammax 400 w/ 2 delta 4000rpm push pull | Antec Neo Eco Zen 500w

Thank you man. Very helpful. I can finally narrow my options. ?

What about the i7-3770K version? Would it work the same as the 3770?

only if you have the z-chip mobo, (for overclocking the "K" chip), otherwise they are pretty much the same.

also 2600/k is a great alternative

Hi, I have the same Motherboard and same CPU Socket, I got an Intel Core i7-2600 for very cheap, considering this isn't on the list would it be absoloutely incompatible?
