VPN is not going to touch any browser extensions you installed. VPN only route your connection to the vpn server you connect and that it is.

Depends on your VPN and what it filters. PIA installed on your computer? Yes. All your traffic will go through the VPN. 

OpenVPN or browser extension? Ehhhhh... Depends on the provider.

Your VPN will route all outgoing WAN traffic (including chrome extensions) through the VPN if it is a desktop VPN like PIA, NordVPN, IPVanish, Tunnelbear, etc.

It only affect connection but in term of touching the browser extension is none.
