Hey guys, I have a Problem with my Mainboard. Only 2 of my 4 memory slots are working. At first I thought Its a dead memory channel, but there is a little problem.

Whenever I change the dimms to the other ports it does work and both of the other channels are dead. Has anyone an idea? BTW, Im German, hope everything is understandable.

CPU:             Intel Xeon e31245

Mainboard:   Asus P8Z77-M

What RAM modules are you using? Do they all match?

Im using 2 older no-name sticks. They are identical. I also tryed it with a couple of sticks from samsung, hynix and also hp-labeled ones.

And you're making sure to reset the BIOS each time? Resetting it can usually fix errors like this.

If you've removed your CPU recently I'd look to see if there's bent pins in the socket.

THe board has 4 slots, but you only use 2 sticks, how are you testing the other two slots?

Also, according to the Asus website, the Xeon chip isn't officially supported.

I tryed it with 4. But then always one channel (2 slots) is dead. If I go with 2 dimms every channel is working.

I know its not officially supported, but can this be the reason only one channel is working at once

Xeons are also very picky about RAM, expecting ECC (which isn't supported on your mobo) so yeah, that could be an issue. Got the latest BIOS flashed on the mobo? Default settings, not overclocked?

Yes, if it would support ECC there would be no problem xD. Latest bios is flashed and also no overclocking applied.

But thanks a lot.

You could try some high quality matching RAM, but I suspect you'll end up with the same result. Xeons, in my experience, are very picky about non-ECC RAM and 2 slots may be all you get to work.
