Questions before upgrading ram

Go to solution Solved by Otto_iii,

okay so everything else is already pretty low power draw, not harsh at all, if somehow the PSU goes after installing the ram its a complete coincidence.  I see no reason to worry about it

I recently purchased 2x16gb of the 3200mhz corsair vengeance RGB PRO, but I want to ask something before replacing my 2x4gb 3000mhz ripjawsV.

I have a 1tb 7200 seagate barracuda hdd with a 16gb optane to accelerate it, and I also have a very crappy 550w “Cooler power” psu (I forgot the model number).

If I change my ram, will it mess up the HDD+Optane system and cause me to loose my data? Do I have to disable optane first?

does 32gb 3200mhz consume a lot more power than 8gb 3000mhz? I don’t know if my power supply’s really 550w and if it will blow up.

Put your build into a wattage estimator and note the change when you swap your parts.

I used the power supply calculator, and my build should consume less than 550w. But I’m not sure if my “550w” power supply can handle it.

I'm not really an expert regarding PSUs but what I read is that you should add somewhere between 100-150ish extra Watts  to the estimated value. If you post the build it's probably easier for others to help since they know exactly what you're asking about.

The difference if any is likely to be maybe about 6 watts, if anything at all.  Most 4gb ram sticks consume about 1.5w, going up linearly with capacity and wattage (so about 6w for each 16gb).  DDR4 is a lot more power efficient then DDR3 was, about 1.5 watts for 4gb, 3w for 8gb, 6w for 16gb.  32gb total usually coming in around 11-12watts, even if we assume the RGB is somehow sucking down power and you lightly OC'd the voltage id be surprised if it drew more then 15w

Hopefully under no circumstance are you so close to your PSUs limit that 6-10 or so extra watts would fry it.  What type of CPU and GPU are you running?  If you don't have a super power hungry GPU, something that often takes like 300w power consumption, and in such case already almost frying the PSU as is, id be amazed if you had a issue.  You really should be fine

I have an i5 8400 and a GTX 1060 3GB
