I'm thinking of upgrading my PC in the coming years, but I was wondering if it would be smarter to upgrade my GPU or my CPU (which would entail upgrading RAM, motherboard, and cooler as well). Here is my current setup:

i7 4790k @ 4.38GHz

Reference GTX 970

16GB DDR3 RAM

MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Motherboard

My assumption is that it would be more beneficial to upgrade to something like a Ryzen 2 or 3 which would obviously require a new motherboard, DDR4 RAM, and a new cooler which would cost more than just the cost of a GPU, say a used 1080 or 1080ti. My main question is this: will upgrading just the GPU give a more significant upgrade than upgrading everything else, or will it bottleneck and not net much performance making it worth saving up to upgrade everything else? Thanks for the help.

In terms of FPS in games? GPU.

That i7 has 8 threads at a decent clock speed so should still be managing fine in most games. Some of the new big AAA titles will probably cause it to struggle a bit but in most cases the 970 is still going to be the biggest bottleneck.

Wouldn't suggest running like a 2080 super/ti or stuff like that on that i7 but a 1080/ti it should handle fine in most cases

The 4790K is still a fine CPU, overclocked it still keeps up nicely and should for a couple more years. I'd say a GPU upgrade would do you more good than a platform upgrade in terms of price to performance. Going for a 2060 Super or a used 1080 or 1080ti would be a fine idea. If you go for the 1080ti make sure you overclock your CPU if you aren't already.

I reckon you might get up to a 1080 with that cpu possibly 1080ti but I wouldn’t trust it any higher.
