Need help with my new MSI MoBo & Ryzen CPU

Stilg7

Hello all, I've recently purchased a MSI 450i MoBo and a Ryzen 3600. The 450i that I have DOES NOT have the flash bios buttion so I am completely lost on how to do this so I can get my new PC to work. My old PC has an intel i7-4790k and a Asus rog maximus vii hero. I also have a 32gb flash drive. If someone could explain to me in detail what I need to do or if you can link me a video that shows this being done with my current situation that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

If the motherboard's BIOS is not new enough (which can be confirmed by you attempting to boot it with the 3600 in), you will need a Ryzen 2000, Ryzen 1000 or an Athlon 200GE to POST the system, enter the BIOS and use the in-BIOS flashing utility. The board does not feature USB Flashback or any similar feature, so you will need a compatible CPU. I would not recommend using an AMD A-series APU, as they lose support in the Ryzen 3000 BIOS update.

AMD offers boot-kits to customers on their website, but you can also check with local PC shops to see if they can do the flash for you if you don't want to go through the hassle.

Main Rig: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X | RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) KLEVV CRAS XR RGB DDR4-3600 | Motherboard: Gigabyte B550I AORUS PRO AX | Storage: 512GB SKHynix PC401, 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus, 2x Micron 1100 256GB SATA SSDs | GPU: EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra 10GB | Cooling: ThermalTake Floe 280mm w/ be quiet! Thank you for such a quick response. Can you please tell me what the least expensive choice would be for me? Just a little more specification would be awesome so I can buy one for as cheap as possible. Thanks again

You can apply for a free boot kit on AMD's website. They will send you an Athlon 200GE, and you can use it to update your BIOS and then send back the CPU to them. This is the cheapest option, though you may have to contact MSI first to see if they'll do anything about it.

Ok I applied for one but I'm afraid that it might take a while. What CPU would be the cheapest to buy used? I'll just flash the BIOS and then return the used CPU, at least that would be my plan ?

New, the cheapest chip would probably be the Ryzen 3 1200 at $59.37 or the Athlon 200GE at $56.99 (both on Amazon US.)

Hey man I was able to get a ryzen 3 1200 and I was wondering if you could explain to me how to flash the BIOS. Or if you know of a good video I can watch. Also, do I need to have the OS on my new system or can I do this without much setup and just with a flash drive? TIA

All you need is the Ryzen 3 1200, your GPU, the motherboard, a cooler for the CPU, a PSU, a flash drive and a working computer. You do not need an installed OS to do this, but you will need a working computer to download the BIOS file to.

Go to the product page for your motherboard, go to "Support" and download the latest BIOS. Unzip the folder, and put the BIOS file on the root of your flash drive. Then follow this guide:

Main Rig: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X | RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) KLEVV CRAS XR RGB DDR4-3600 | Motherboard: Gigabyte B550I AORUS PRO AX | Storage: 512GB SKHynix PC401, 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus, 2x Micron 1100 256GB SATA SSDs | GPU: EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra 10GB | Cooling: ThermalTake Floe 280mm w/ be quiet! Ok so I got it up and running but when I go into the m flash settings this comes up and when I hit enter nothing happens. When I looked up the current bios it says it has MSi says that the bios are ready for the newer cpus. Is something broke? I’m really confused now

Can you figure out what Bios version its running currently? It should say somewhere, on MSI usually in upper right hand corner. that would help us help you.   Are you sure "newer" simply didnt mean 2000 series etc at the time the board was probably built?

Your last picture didnt load

NTFS?  reformat flash to Fat32 and stick bios back on flash once you've done that, rename the Bios file to "MSI.ROM" if you didn't already

i don't believe you can update a bios if flash is formatted in NTFS, and file name needs to be correct
