My PC has been fine for the past months with no issues at all since my last ton of issues which was last year.  However just starting yesterday I've been getting BSOD like crazy.  So before you ask here is all the info:

Specs:

CPU: i7 3820

GPU: Asus GTX 650 DCU

PSU: Silverstone strider plus 600w 80+ silver

SSD: Samsung 840 EVO

Mobo: Asus p9x79le

RAM: Adata premier pro 1600mhz

BIOS is set to the defaults, no overclocking or messing with the system.  I have reinstalled Windows to see if the problem was software related.

Programs installed during BSOD:

Chrome

Steam

Latest drivers

Malwarebytes

Geforce Experience

HW monitor

CPU-Z

Razer Synapse 2.0

Samsung Magician

Logitech Gaming software

Microsoft security essentials

Skype

All Drivers are up to date.

All Latest Windows updates are installed. The BSOD only ever happened after I installed DOTA 2 on steam.  Since then this has happened.  Or yesterday, since then I've had 3 BSOD.  I do not have any spare parts or components but all parts except SSD are on warrenty, the SSD is on warranty by a different manufacturer.

Please help I need this computer and am really struggling to diagnose this BSOD, thanks in advance.

Luckily I have a macbook that I use for school, that I can report the situation on.  Is it possible its the sata drivers?  I've never had a problem with the latest Intel RSTE driver, but should I use the plain old RST?  because apparently RSTE has allot of problems.

Have you tried uninstalling DOTA 2 to see if the problem goes away?

Do you have to be using the computer for the BSOD to happen or has it occurred with the system sitting idle?

it happens in both situations, and yes I did indeed uninstall DOTA 2 and even a fresh install and installed all my drivers, so its either a driver or a hardware problem.

Boot into Safe Mode and spend some time doing stuff. If you don't get a BSOD then it is most likely a driver issue and you can use MSConfig to disable boot stuff until the item is found. If Safe Mode has the same problem then go into the BIOS and play around, let it sit, play some more. The system may freeze or reboot since BSOD are a Windows thing.

You can also try running memtest all day or over night - it really has to be for several hours unless you get and error.

I'm currently running windows memory diagnostic tool for about 5-7 hours.  See if that finds anything, I will most certainly try your idea and will report back.  Though just one question, if it is a driver issue, what do you think I should do?

As I was doing the memtest I heard a hissing sound starting to come up! It was coming from my power supply, it sounds like a fan but also doesn't.  Itsn crazily loud, what do you think? I'm starting to worry now, that for the 2nd time my power supply has failed :(

Smell test - sniff the rear of the psu to see if there is any burning smell. Visually verify that the psu fan is turning.

There is a utility in Windows called MSConfig that lets you control what gets loaded at boot. It is actually intended to help people get Windows booted but it works just fine for isolating misbehaving services and drivers. You can get a description of the utility at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/using-system-configuration#1TC=windows-7.

Thanks, but how would I see if the PSU fan is running?  I can't just flip the PC up and look, because I have a spinning hard drive in there and am running memtest.

Edit: Report:

I looked inside the power supply, can't see much.  Slight burning smell but doesn't smell like fire burning, or smoke burning or plastic burning.  But I can't see blades at all! all I can see is a little center bit of the fan through the plastic thingy move, can't see any blades though.

I noticed you are using "Geforce Experience", so I though I would reply.

I have had the same happen to me, and after looking around at other sites, I think it is the latest Nvidia beta updates, Its the last thing I had installed, then I started getting the BSOD, so I reinstalled windows, done all drivers everything worked fine until I installed the latest Nvidia drivers, So I reinstalled and tried it again, and once again it was fine until I installed the latest Nvidia drivers.  So finally I reinstalled windows, and went back to the latest stable version on the nvidia drivers (NOT BETA) and everything is now fine.

Long story short,

  • Installed Nvidia beta drivers, = BSOD
  • Done the usual hardware tests and everything was running fine.
  • reinstalled windows twice, both time I also installed the nvidia beta drivers = BSOD
  • Reinstalled again, this time latest stable nvidia drivers (Non BETA) and everything is fine, restarted pc around 15 times, now been on for around 12 hours, and everything is still running smoothly.

Looked around on other sites, and saw about 4 or 5 people complain about the same thing, and the only thing they had installed in the time leading up to these BSOD, were the latest Nvidia Beta Drivers.

So have you installed the latest Nvidia Beta Drivers ? (think they came out a few days ago)

I installed the latest stable drivers, I never use BETA drivers. Thanks for your help anyways.

The easiest way to check for a psu fan working is holding a piece of tissue paper up to the exhaust. If it is blown away from the vent then the fan must be working.

If you can't see fan blades and the system is running, then the fan is running.

If you are smelling charred material monitor the situation. Is the noise still happening?

It does smell kind of like Charred Material, the noise is still happening.  I held a tissue just behind the power supply (where the power cord plugs in) and it didn't move.

I would shut down the machine. Unplug the psu and remove it from the case. Do the smell test around the unit to learn if the smell is stronger. If you can gently try to move the fan blades. They should move freely.

But If I smell in the ventilation at the top of the case, I also smell the same smell.  The Local PC shop I bought the PSU from, also installed it for me... for no extra cost.  But its under warrenty, should I call them and get them to test it?  because its under warrenty.  Its a Silverstone Strider Plus 600w 80+ silver (technically 80+ gold)

If the shop is local definitely take the system unit in to them to check out. Even good psu fail occassionally. Let us know the outcome please.
