So I am very big into computer building and the latest technology, but there is one more thing I want to do besides watercool.

I want to Overclock! To me though this is one thing that sounds scary and I'm probably going to purchase Intel's overclocking insurance for me 3770K.

My motherboard is a Asus P8p67 B3 rev. and I have an Antec 920 H20 so I'm ready to go.

However with overclocking I don't just want to overclock my CPU like a monkey, but I want to learn what it all actually is so I have the skills to overclock any CPU, especially new release ones that no one has yet and there is no manual.

 

So is there a guide on how to overclock anything! If someone could link one in the post here I would be ecstatic, and hopefully this week I'll be a bronze or silver member too!

As far as I know, run prime95 for 24 hours.  increase frequency until crash, then raise the cpu voltage. run prime95 test for 24 hours for every increase in frequency or voltage.

Most things should apply fine. You may have to navigate your bios, but from my experience with Asus boards, it shouldn't be difficult.

 

So ya that tutorial from Linus will work great, but how about for ANY CPU.

I have not messed with them before, I changed my CPU Ratio to 41 (that means 4.1 GHz) and my CPU Voltage to 1.120 V. I am pretty sure it's true for many overclockable CPU's. like the AMD FX series, or the i5 and i7 series with a K suffix.

Well every CPU is different... but the jist of it will apply to any. Increase the multiplier until it's no longer stable once you've hit that point, you can increase the voltage until you reach a temperature you aren't comfortable with. There are some other minor things that are different for every cpu, but those are pretty complex and only help with minor stability.

Ok, what is the difference between the multiplier and the frequency though?

Increase multiplier

 

Run stress test (don't Prime95 a Haswell) if no crashing after 30 mins

increase mutlitplier

 

if crash

add voltage

 

rinse and repeat. keep an eye on temps. after finding max stable overclock with acceptable temps stress test for 6 hours minimum.
