Adding Bluetooth to Desktop

I am looking to add Bluetooth to my desktop. I built it a few just over a year ago but I didn't use a motherboard that came with Bluetooth due to price.

I tried using a  Avantree USB Bluetooth 4.0 Adapter Dongle but I find the range to be pretty short and the audio quality to be terrible.

I know that wireless sound isn't as good as wired but the Bluetooth from my phone and iPad are way better than the dongle. 

Are there other solutions that anyone would recommend? I need it to last me few years until I can justify upgrade the components in my PC.

The dongles should be fine unless you're trying to send the signal pretty far. Shouldn't have any issues on the same desk.

Could try a slightly nicer dongle, otherwise does your motherboard have built in wifi or a slot for it? What board is it?

I'm using an ASUS Prime Z270-A LGA1151 motherboard. 

I'm not sure if it has a built in slot for bluetooth/wifi though

It does not, it would have a mini PCI-e slot and a place on the back to mount the antennas like on some ITX boards or boards with Wifi.

You can get an open box PCI-e wireless + bluetooth thing here from ASUS, not sure anyone makes PCI-e bluetooth only things for less.
