Hey all,

Pretty new hear, so sorry if this is in the wrong spot. I was hoping to find a sticky or thread about egpus, but wasn't able to find much besides others posting their individual questions so I will post mine as well.

I am due to get a new work laptop, one of the following models

ZBook Mobile Workstation-Z14u G6

EliteBook Notebook PC-x360 1030 G4

They will both have the i5-8365U, 16gb ram (let me know if more specs are needed)

They both have Thunderbolt ports and my assumption is that the Elitebook would be the better of the 2 as far as performance due to the larger size/better cooling even with similar CPU specs. However I don't know how many PCIE lanes they have and I am not sure how to check that.

Also wondering if there are any new egpus in the works that I should maybe wait for? I haven't heard much about them at all lately but I would guess there must be some newer ones in the works. I currently have a VEGA 56 and would ideally use that card and put my old 7970 back in my desktop. I use the laptop significantly more than I use my desktop though so the more performance from the laptop the better. I mostly ask because I won't be buying this equipment for at least a few months, but I want to have my planning done or at least a very good idea of the direction to go.

Thanks!

You will bottleneck the GPU using an EGPU solution.

I would say the Vega 56 is plenty, as you won't be able to max out its performance over thunderbolt 3.

My only concern with putting that in an eGPU enclosure is the power consumption, so definitely pay attention to that when looking at enclosures.
