Seagate vs WD

Is there any noticeable difference between say a 4TB Seagate vs a 4TB WD Black?

 

Is the black worth the extra $100?

You will notice no difference if you go for similar spec drives. I think WD are a little more expensive though

yes its more reliable and is faster but i would say to get two 3tb blacks if you have the money because thats a better deal that a 4tb black

Not much but WD is like 20 years old+ and then black drives are bullet proof basicly

WD anyday tbh i have had a lot of problem with Seagate in the past and no problem with WD drives even when my external reached 50+ it still worked fine WD are just well built all round

I have a seagate and i've had no problems with it, but it can make some noise at times. But i think you get what you pay for when buying hdd's

My seagate made weird noises until I disabled APM on it so I would go with WD since the noise it made was UNBEARABLE!

Ive used both Seagate and WD drives. I would recommend either (at least on the consumer side). Just look around and see what deals you find and then pick the best one. Also if you don't need a really high RPM drive (ie a WD Black) you can save a good chunk of money. Right now my storage drives on my main rig are WD Greens, they work great for storage where I don't really need the high rpm. If you are using an SSD for your boot drive I don't see a compelling case for using a high rpm drive. Anyway, just my two cents. Hope this helps.

That black drive performs (very) slightly better in sequential operations, and better in random operations.

 

The main advantage is the manufacturer warranty.

WD Blacks are a waste of money, which could've been spent on a small SSD. If you can't decide for a team, look at RMA rates and the warranty that you get with each drive.

I have been using Seagate drives for my builds and they didn't fail on me. I heard that the Black gets pretty hot when it is in use compared to the Seagate Barracuda.
