Tethering vs Dongle

Hi there. 

I don't know if im allowed to make these post here, i'll delete if not. 

 

I am going to be living abroad for about 10-12 mounths. And I need a local phone number, but still want to keep my old number.

I am gonna use some of my spare time gaming, but I don't want to spend money on both broadband and 2 phone contracts.

I can use my phone to tether to my laptop (unlimited data) and I get a pretty good result. But I get these lagspikes every so often, and it makes gaming unbearable. Can a 4G dongle solve this problem?

So if I bought a 4g router that would not fix it either?
