Go to the 8th or 9th gen, those CPUs have a minimum of four cores and most likely you will find good prices.

To give you a good idea of whether or not you need to upgrade the CPU we have to know what refresh rate your monitor is, whether or not you are satisfied with your current setup, whether you game casually or competitively, as a starting point..

Monitor refresh rate is important, because getting a substantially higher average FPS than the refresh rate of your monitor provides little value for the amount you have to invest in that. For example, if you're running a 240hz monitor at 1080p on your GTX 1080, but your old i5 6400 is significantly bottle-necking in your specific gaming use case (the game you are playing), causing you to achieve sub 240 FPS regularly, and you are not satisfied with this, because you're a keen eye, (unlike Linus and his staff) then upgrading your CPU would make sense. This same logic applies for 144hz as well.

Ideally, you just want to exceed the refresh rate of your monitor in FPS, MOST OF THE TIME if you're a casual gamer, and ALL OF THE TIME if you're a competitive gamer. So if your 1080p monitor is 144hz, aim for 144 average FPS if you're a casual gamer in your favorite game, and if you're a COMPETITIVE gamer then you want to exceed that 144 FPS all of the time. Going beyond this is of little value. I'm not going to do much hand holding here, you'll have to look up your own specs and make the decisions by yourself based on the thought process and logic I have outlined.

Also, if you're looking for a reasonable upgrade path for your 1080 based system, I'm a pretty big fan of the i5 9400F, as far as a plug and play system with no ability or requirement to OC, (no offence you don't seem like you would enjoy messing around with stability and overclocking). I'm sure lots of people will show up to tell me I'm wrong >but muh cores / threads.. Really doesn't matter for what you're doing. You just need a CPU that can keep up with that GPU overall and the 9400F will do that at a very reasonable price.

Right now you're decently bottlenecked, but again that may or may not matter if you're already exceeding in FPS the refresh rate of your monitor.

tl;dr

case 1: FPS>REFRESH-- no point in upgrading pc without buying a higher refresh rate monitor first

case 2: FPS<REFRESH-- upgrade only if not satisfied

May be not, in special because you are only running one game.
