I bought a new Acer Nitro 5 a couple of months back. I've yet to open mine, but in checking out some teardown/upgrades it looks to have a second empty M.2 slot for an easy storage upgrade.

I've always been a bit confused about how the whole M.2 compatibility works, with different keys and SATA/NVMe compatibility.

From what I can see from the teardowns I've watched, it looks like both M.2 slots are M Key PCIe slots, does mean I can ONLY use NVMe drives or can I use either SATA or NVMe?

The drive I'm interested in is this Samsung 860evo M.2 drive which is a SATA based drive with M + B Keying. It's quite a bit cheaper than the same size 970 evo and I only plan to use it as a fast steam drive, so I don't really need the extra speed NVMe provides.
