Hello. I am a huge dork when it comes to networking stuff. I am 9 years old.

My friend and i are neighbors. We're planning to play Minecraft java together using lan.

But unfortunately, our house are too far to connect to the same wifi. So, we can't play using local network.

We don't wanna give mojang our parents's hard earned $$$ to play on realm. so i found out this thing they called ''Virtual lan''

But, i don't know how to set it up. A little help would be nice. Thanks :^D

A VLAN is used for segmenting a physical network into multiple logical networks that all live in the same overall network (to keep it simple), it won't work the way you think it will in giving you both a local network to play on. If you don't want to spend money then they next best bet is to look at port forwarding on your router so one of you hosts a server locally and the other connects to that server. The downside to this is it will only work if you both are playing and the person hosting the server has it running.

You would need to create a VPN between your neighbors and your PC.

There's plenty of video tutorials available on YouTube. Once you're connected to each other it's as if you're both plugged into the same router.

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

I don't think VLANs are what you are looking for - they are for internal networks mostly and are there to seperate a network into seperate LANs.

What might work is if one of you run a Minecraft server on on of your PCs. You would need to know how to port forward though, and depending on what router you have it could be difficult or easy. There are many guides on the internet on how to do all of this.

You could also try what @Master Disaster said about using a VPN, which might be easier or more difficult but again, that depends on your routers.

Ohh. so VLAN is for dividing a existing lan into seperate lan. Ok, thanks :D. My dumbass thought it's for connecting 2/more devices that are geographically far away. Thanks
