I was looking for a computer to use for college as not having one during classes has proven quite problematic. I am leaning towards a light and sleek laptop such as the macbook pro or the surface laptop 2. But I heard that the new surface laptops were releasing soon and they seem to both have very outdated processors (I think). Are there any other laptops I should be looking at and should I wait for upcoming releases if there are any?

Budget: around $1500 CAD

If you're looking for slim and light, then probably a ThinkPad X1 Carbon. They're really light (2.4 lbs/1.whatever-translates-from-freedom-units-into-kilograms for the 7th gen); but still have a lot of the traditional ThinkPad durability and ruggedness. Discounts of Canadian students at that link. You save an extra 5% with it. Just find your school.

EDIT: For friends and family of Canadian IMB employees. They're not going to check if you actually are. I think you might get better discounts there. There's also one for IBM employees. Can be found in the r/ThinkPad wiki intro.

The lenovo website was the only place I could find it, and its probably around 2.2k after taxes just for the base model which is a bit out of my price range

Dang. Even with IBM discount, the base model is $1514 CAD. Did not realize how different it is in Canadian dollars. Maybe you can find a refurb 6th gen on eBay?
