Upgrading hardware

I've currently got an i5-4690k with a GTX 970. I'm planning on upgrading my graphics card to either a gtx 1080 or 1080 ti, depending on what prices I can find on ebay at the time. I'm assuming I'll be getting quite a bit of bottleneck with my current CPU so would it be worth the extra cost of completely changing platforms in order to support a newer, more efficient processor or just sticking with my Z97 motherboard and buying a second hand I7-4790k. The main uses of my computer is gaming and a bit of uni work.
