Thermal paste or pad?

Hey guys,

I am working on a small emulation station on an old ASUS laptop. About 5 years. My question is would a thermal pad work better than paste to join the two surfaces? You can see the scuffs where they meet. I plan on cleaning the old factory paste off the cpu and reapplying. It seems pretty hard. This laptop was a complete turd from day one. Im hoping that doing this will help with the heat dissipation.Thanks for any advice.

a pad is easier for replacement down the line, no cleaning. It should still perform adequately.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

 

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

A graphite pad is like $20, and a normal thermal pad ain't worth it for high power draw components.
