Should i upgrade my gpu or my cpu?

Iovl123

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if i should upgrade my gpu, Or wait till i upgrade my cpu first.

My current system has i7-6700 none k,

16 gb ram @ 2133 mhz and gtx 1070.

Im playing on 1440p, and im aiming for at least 60 fps stable with all graphics crancked to max.

Thanks for any reply.

Edit:

Forgot to mention the upgrade will probably be either 2080 super or ryzen 7 3700x and a new mobo.

You will see a greater gain in gaming performance by going with an RTX 2080 Super than by going with a Ryzen 7 3700X, so I would go down that route. Also consider higher speed memory, as a 3200MHz kit of DDR4 can also improve gaming performance (and you'll be able to use it down the road when you get a CPU/board upgrade)

Main Rig: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X | RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) KLEVV CRAS XR RGB DDR4-3600 | Motherboard: Gigabyte B550I AORUS PRO AX | Storage: 512GB SKHynix PC401, 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus, 2x Micron 1100 256GB SATA SSDs | GPU: EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra 10GB | Cooling: ThermalTake Floe 280mm w/ be quiet! Pure Wings 3 | Case: Sliger SM580 (Black) | PSU: Lian Li SP 850W

Server: CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3100 | RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) Crucial DDR4 Pro | Motherboard: ASUS PRIME B550-PLUS AC-HES | Storage: 128GB Samsung PM961, 4TB Seagate IronWolf | GPU: AMD FirePro WX 3100 | Cooling: EK-AIO Elite 360 D-RGB | Case: Corsair 5000D Airflow (White) | PSU: Seasonic Focus GM-850

Miscellaneous: Dell Optiplex 7060 Micro (i5-8500T/16GB/512GB), Lenovo ThinkCentre M715q Tiny (R5 2400GE/16GB/256GB), Dell Optiplex 7040 SFF (i5-6400/8GB/128GB)

I'd say gpu first, but i might be able to play around with your budget to get the most out of it

what is your country and budget here? and what psu and case do you have (pcpp of the whole build would be even better)

So about those 2 opposing opinions..

I realise that ill get a better performance boost in gaming by upgrading my gpu first, i might have not been clear as to my question: will the 6700 drop the performance enough to justify a cpu upgrade first, Or will the bottleneck be small enough to upgrade to a relatively "future proof" gpu and upgrade the cpu and mobo later?

If ill lose 20-30 fps/ percent of performance because of the cpu, i dobt consider that as "worth" to go with the gpu first.

At most, there will be about a 5-10% difference in gaming performance between the 6700 non-K and a more modern Intel chip such as the 9700K. For 1440p60, the 6700 shouldn't have a problem. Also consider that as resolution gets higher, CPU bottlenecks become less prevalent as your GPU has to push harder.

Im not currently at home, and dont remember the exact specs of my pc, pretty sure the psu is 650w bronze, the mobo is a rather cheap gigabyte one, the case is nzxt h340. regarding a budget, im not aiming to spend a certain amount to improve gaming. lets say the budget is that of a 2080 super, and the pricing in my country is a bit odd? 2080 super goes for around 900$ (2080 ti is around 1400-1500$). but all components are equally overpriced.. ordering online isnt any better thanks to pretty high VAT..

I know that higher resolution puts more load onto the gpu, and although ive always been a part of team blue, the new ryzens are just too good to pass on.

I was thinking to myself that upgrading to 2080 super before the cpu might be better, as im not going to play on 1080p now or in the future.

Depends on what the future will unfold, i might upgrade my ram after my gpu, but i if what youre saying is true, i think going with new gpu is better for now.

Thanks to everyone who helped!

At only 60fps I would think GPU would be a priority, though it depends on the games you want to play too. Some games are CPU intensive though most aren't.

I am running a 6600k and a 5700xt and at 144fps I'm typically only using 80% of the CPU.

oh... then nevermind

you could pick up something like a 2080, 1080 ti, 2070 super and maybe a new cpu with that if you got any budget left

if you were to go to the cpu part with ryzen, i'd oc your ram
