PC heavily underperforming

Go to solution Solved by G0hma,

Haha guys well i guess i found my issue LMAO. Im running single channel ram oops. Thanks for trying to help tho!

Setup:

OS: Windows 10 64bit

GPU: Gigabyte windforce 1660ti +140 on Core +800 on Memory

CPU: i5-7600k OC to 4.4GHz

RAM: 8GB 2800MHz

PSU: 700 watt

I already tried reverting the overclocks but that didn't have any effect.

Air cooled but no overheating issues at all.

All drivers, windows & bios are running on the newest versions.

All my overclocks are also running stable at their set speeds.

No issues with dust in my build either.

Hey guys!

Recently upgraded from a 750ti to a 1660ti and was hoping to get those juicy fps boosts but well that didn't happen.

I'm getting the same/worse fps in games now even though my exact setup even without overclocks should easily burn through all games at 1080p according to every benchmark i managed to find.

Weirdest thing is that in most games the settings i use do NOT affect the fps at all for example my fps in overwatch at low/off settings are 90-140 and on high/ultra they are the exact same. According to gpucheck.com i should be getting around 220 at least when i play on low settings.

What power supply do you have? I don't mean the wattage, I mean the exact model. It would be useful to know what motherboard you have too. Make sure that vsync is off. Check your cpu and gpu usage while running a game. Post a screenshot of GPU-Z

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

My ram never hits 100% usage so i doubt that its the ram.

It never will, not even if you try to force it to by using some memory stresstest like Aida64 or prime95, it’ll max out at around 90 - 95% usage.
Once you hit around 85%+ memory usage in a realistic workload you are close to being maxed. By default settings windows starts to allocate the C : drive’s SSD/HDD for virtual memory than, which is fine for office work but not gaming or similar.
Hower if you only run normal stuff, like discord a browser with a few tabs and such in the background while playing overwatch, 8GB should still be very fine. I mean I can run fortnite fine on my thin & light "multimedia" laptop with 8GB RAM so I dont see why overwatch should not be able to run on 8GB.

Anyway, high FPS (100+) is more of a CPU & RAM thing than a GPU one, especially in easy running games like overwatch.
Your GPU can be a 2080 ti, if your CPU can't handle all it's drawcalls and the memory does not have enough bandwidth to put them through, you might as well put a 750ti in it again as the 2080 ti will sit at around 20% usage on a low power state while the rest of your system is stressed out.

The bottom line is, if you want high FPS, get a i7 8700 or 9700, clock in 4,8ghz+, pair it with high bandwidth 3000mhz+ ram sticks with nice tight timings and make sure you get two sticks & run them in dual channel mode.

An i5 on “only” 4.4 ghz is a fine processor still if you are happy with 60 - 120FPS on average but at the end of the day it's still only a quad core i5 and that's just a tiny bit better than the legen - wait for it - dary, i7 2600k. (overclocked ofc)

If you however still think that your GPU is underperforming simply run 3DMark or Unigine Heaven and check if your scores line up with similar built systems. Which is very easy to do here: https://www.3dmark.com/search#/?mode=advanced

@Nord or quote me if you want me to reply back. I don't necessarily check back or subscribe to every topic.

You'll never hit 100% usage especially on Windows 10 (minus specific applications), unless if you have so much bloatware that Windows doesn't know what to do.
You will constantly be putting things into the page file and constantly compress and decompress things within RAM.
Your CPU will be forever waiting for the RAM to catch up because Windows is continually trying to save space.

It's not a race to the bottom.

I should be getting ~twice as much as FPS as i actually get with the setup im currently using. There is no need to upgrade my CPU to reach 200+fps at all.

I always only have a game & discord running so yeah 8GB is actually enough for that.
