I have the option of upgrading my GPU to 1 of 2 options, an r9 fury x for $135 or a vega 56 for about $200. If I'm going to be gaming at 1080p would the extra cost be worth it if I already have an r9 290? or would it really only be worth upgrading if I plan to also upgrade my peripherals as well?

Yeah that's pretty much where I was with that, i've been seeing people say the 4gb limit isn't much of an issue if the settings are turned down to compensate for less vram (some say it's approaching 980ti/1070 performance) is there much of a deficit when gaming on the fury x at 1440p?

Yeah you can tweak the quality settings to make games behave and fit in 4 GB of memory... but I was thinking more about driver support, how newer games will support these older cards that were sold in smaller volume etc etc

Fury is GCN 3.0, 28nm process... already 3+ generations old .. Polaris (RX 4xx , RX 5xx) is GCN 4.0 , Vega56 is GCN 5.0 , Radeon 7 is GCN 5.1 , Navi is RDNA

AMD is not gonna put much effort into making games work well on Fury... if they didn't already they're gonna soon "freeze" the driveers for GCN 3.0 and only update for critical bugs... they'll focus on RX and newer.  So any new driver you'd get, it would basically be same thing for your Fury, while the newer cards will still get some updates and game patches for some time.
