CPU Upgrade - Or Wait?

Hi All,

Just canvassing opinions,

Build a i9 9900k now - or hold off until the next Intel refresh?

I'm re-purposing my i7 7700 as a media pc / machine for my better half. And want to build a machine that will last for the foreseeable future. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/yKbX9J - My Current part list is here.

My expected parts needed to upgrade i think are . . .

CPU (i9 9900k)

Mobo

RAM (3000 / 3200)

PSU - To go in previous build

GPU (if needed vs on board 7700)

Boot Disk for previous build

might as well shoot for a 3700X, it's basically an i9 9900K for cheaper.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

What do you do on the machine?

Do you still have the i7-7700 stock cooler?

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

I would upgrade to a i9 9900K because intel isn’t going to refresh the i9 9h gen to a 10th gen. The only cpus being refreshed are the i7, i5, and i3

The most recent news I've seen is that Intel is still a ways off replacing their 9th Gen Desktop CPUs.  On what information are you stating that they're "only refreshing the i7 through i3" ?  I'd like to know how valid it is.

Especially when this article is from July (granted this is usual WCCF Tech Rumors that claim to be based on pulls from a Chinese forum): https://wccftech.com/intel-10th-gen-comet-lake-desktop-cpu-lineup-leak-lga-1159-socket-rumor/

Here's a PCPartPicker mock-up of what the AMD Upgrade would cost/look like (the Motherboard price hasn't posted yet, but I simulated it's likely to be around $90, the case was inserted to check board/space compatibility, but is marked as purchased already) :

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor  ($327.89 @ B&H)
Motherboard: MSI B450M MORTAR MAX Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($90.00)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory  ($69.99 @ Amazon)
Case: Corsair Crystal 280X RGB MicroATX Mid Tower Case  (Purchased For $0.00)
Total: $487.88
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

This also assumes you use your AIO cooler for it as it would just need the AM4 bracket on it.

AMD is something i've not ruled out - the reason why i9 9900k vs AMD was mainly due to motherboard availability locally.

Current cooler is a H150i pro i think (RGB Corsair AIO)

Why does it need to be available locally?  Are you not in the US?  Otherwise no point in shopping via PCPartPicker as it'll find you the best deal online.  Do you have concerns about buying online?  Keep in mind with AMD you run far less risk with motherboards as they don't have the PINs on them, they're on the AMD CPUs, so the risk is opposite that of Intel.

I'm in the UK unfortunately rather than the US.

I tend to with any significant purchases rely on a local PC specialist int eh event of any issues.

I ended up picking up a i9 9900 KF - extremely happy with the upgrade. And the better half has decided to keep the previous machine for herself - which is something i wasn't expecting!
