In Pro/Enterprise there's a setting in Control Panel > Updates, in Home you can't.

Hit Windows+R and type services.msc and hit enter. Scroll to Windows Update Service and rightclick and disable it. Also go to properties and make sure to set as manual start up (or something like that).

And then leave your PC vulnerable to all manner of exploits...

Terrible advice, this is the exact reason MS removed control away from users. By not keeping your PC updated you're helping the criminals who benefit from exploiting users.

He asked how to do it, so I gave him the answer. With updates to any device these days having more of a chance to wreak havoc than fix anything, I simply disable all auto updates for myself, and most people I help get setup. I do make sure they keep their stuff up to date, but manually. This way whatever update bugs there are get worked out before they do it themselves and they ultimately avoid any problems. As long as you use your head and have a good A/V and VPN, there's not much to worry about. At least for 99.9% of users out there anyway.

Right, because your AV will protect you from hardware vulnerabilities and 0 day software exploits. There is no excuse for not installing security patches.

Recommended and feature updates, yeah I see your point but disabling security updates because the latest build broke your sound is silly. It's exactly like skipping vaccinating your child because a long discredited scientist posted false information in order to further his own cause.

I mean hey, you're not wrong here. But you can easily install security patches manually. So really it's not a big deal.

Idk man that's a stretch right there. I'm not saying "dont vaccinate your kids" I'm instead saying "wait a lil bit to make sure they didn't fuck up the formula this time". Going back to updates, it's kinda what we're forced to do these days. I don't know what causes companies to release broken updates, but it happens more often today than it did even back in the days of Windows 7. Manually installing updates is a safer bet these days. Update is released, give it a day or two and check the internet to see if people's data has been deleted or of some other weird shit is happening. No reports after a few days? Cool. Install time. Simple.

That's a fair enough strategy though not something I'd recommend to your average Joe user but for advanced users, sure.

I can't disagree with the sentiment, MS have messed up a lot of updates recently and a lot of people have lost data because of Windows forcing updates.

Unfortunately I've seen the results of people not updating their computers and it's not pretty. Ideally MS should seperate security updates from feature updates.

This conversation is a little pointless because Windows can re-enable this service anyway when needed. There are other methods that works, including o&o shutup 10 tool (or made the same manually with registry editor and some modifications). Method with metered connection works too as far as I know.

If you set it to manual startup, it shouldn't. None of the computers I've done this to have ever re-enabled it. It's been over four years for some of those pcs and they still don't have it enabled.

You should be looking on why this is has stopped working.

Did you update the drivers? Did you ask the support of your headset? Maybe there is an option you missed in Windows or the headset control panel.
