so I am planning to upgrade my current pc from

4790k

msi z97 gaming 5

32gb corsair vengeance pro

750w corsair power supply

gigabyte aorus 1080ti

to

9900k

32gb corsair vengeance pro rgb

same PSU and Gpu

however I am undecided on the motherboard

my question is this- is there any particular advantage between different motherboards besides feature set? will similarly priced mid to high range boards give me a similar performance? and is it worth getting a processor that is proffesionally overclocked to 4.9ghz worth it if it is the same price?

thanks in advance

Is the PC for gaming mostly?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

yeah mostly gaming, web browsing and content consumption but I do occasionally host a server and play on it with the same machine

What game do you host a server for? Chances are the 9700K is more suitable, it would yield the same performance basically.

Of course, there's always Ryzen. The 3700X is basically the 9900K for less money. The 3900X is in a league of its own, fastest 12 core in the west.

The i9 would not serve you better then, since Minecraft servers are super single threaded. The 9700K does all you need basically.

ok so if im going for the 9700k then would you recommend that over a ryzen ?

no definitely not, what Ryzen offers for the price is unbeatable. the Ryzen 5 3600 is basically an i7 8700 - for $200. the 3700X is just an i9 9900K, again significantly cheaper. If you are open to the options, AMD offers the superior value.

im open to ryzen but having had intel all my life I am hesitant to go to another plaform purely because I don't know much about it and im unsure whether their would be any problems with program or game compatibilities if that's even possible. I know how to pick compatible pc parts and get a working system but I don't necessarily know the how to get the best bang for my buck or advantages of one platform over another

If you have a Ryzen and Intel based PC in front of you, I guarantee you wouldn't be able to tell the difference unless you opened task manager. It runs all the programs and is just as stable.

As for good part picking, since you're aiming for high end you should shoot for X570 motherboards around the $200 price point

it's a 16 core processor for $750, wouldn't really be great for your use case.

Learning to overclock is a worthwhile process, "professional" just means they'll squeeze a bit more out of it. Trust me the price usually isn't worth it.
