Upfront I this is for my current photo/video editing rig I plan to use the existing hardware for the next 2-3yrs before building a new system. I do intend drive failures and growing into new drives before then

I have kind of collected drives as I've gone along now and have made a mess. Per the title i want to tidy up my storage arrangement and optimize it, Preferably for a video workflow.

I left my day job to do photo/video full time and picked up an NVME drive and a new GPU so I figured now is the time to straighten up.

Here is my current arrangement:

Boot Drive - Evo 850 250GB

Programs - Crucial MX500 240GB

Scratch 1 (old) - Evo 850 250GB

Scratch 2 (new) - Evo 970+ 500GB NVME

Temporary Storage/injest - x2 Seagate Barracuda 1TB non raid

Archive Storage - x2 WD Red 3TB non raid

Extended Archive - x2 WD Passport 4TB USB3 drives non raid

Ex. Extended Archive/Mobile Team share - G Tech 6TB

I had thought about moving my OS and programs to the 970 Evo+ and then making the two 860s a RAID 0 scratch disk, As well as making my two ingest drives a RAID 0 config too. This could be all wrong and I may be an idiot.

That's why I'm asking before I go and further make a mess of my storage config. ?

I appreciate any and all help in advance!

Raid 0 offers no redundancy,so if one drive fails then the data on both drives is gone.

To clean that mess this is what should be done:

One SSD for OS

3 x 10TB hard drives in RAID 5

RAID 5 is much faster than a single drive.

another set of 3 x 10TB hard drives for backup (Because RAID is not a backup)

1st, the 970 evo must be the new drive for OS.

the problem is with those small 3x sata ssds... and thats just 750gb...

I dont think raid all 3 ssd will be faster than 970 . so avoid raid

also note that m.2 drive may disable 2x sata ports on your mobo, you may need a couple pci to sata adaptors or usb 3.5" bays. not sure how raid runs on adapters.

CAUTION: Setting up these changes WILL require drive formatting which WILL delete all data on these drives. You have been warned.

How about this:

Boot drive + programs = 970 evo+

Scratch + ingest = RAID1 / Mirror Storage Space of 2x 850 EVO

retire at least one of the 1TB drives and replace it with 3TB+ HDD, currently 4TB and 6TB drives seem to have the best price/capacity ratio. Shop for NAS drives.

Archive: Parity (RAID5) protected SSD accelerated Tiered Storage Space (MX500 + 3TB HDDs)

you can find guides on how to do this in Powershell on this forum. Parity will give you (n-1)*c of storage, n = number of drives, c = capacity of smallest drive.

archive backup = external drives

In time replace the 850 EVOs with 1TB SATA SSDs, depending on what their remaining writes will be at that point you can change the Archive SSD Tier into a Mirror (RAID1) for additional resiliency.

Plan to get additional NAS for archive backup with RAID1 or RAID5

Looks like the the 970+ will be the new OS drive and the 850s will be a raid 1 scratch.

As for additional drive I'm not looking to buy more at the moment just wanted to get an idea of how to best arrange what I currently have.

I will look into the accelerated tiered storage, that sounds like an interesting setup.

Thanks for the info!
