Hey so I have a 2004 desktop that I would like to build into a picture holding device (server is the idea) and i have 160GB HDD currently and thats all I need for now but I would like to see if I could get Linus the great king himself to respond to this and maybe help me a little and or Alex I could pick his brain with the custom case idea that i have for this project. Do I expect any of the LMG staff to respond,no, I wish they would because this idea has been boiling in my head for a while and would like some help

maybe bad choice of words but its gonna be a server that only holds pictures/short videos that someone in my family takes

You could easily just have a second hard drive in your main PC, or an external hdd. The only reason you'd really want to go with a server is if you need the work to be offloaded to a second system for 24/7 access with no hindrance to your normal workflow on your main pc, you know, as a NAS.

It does need to run 24/7 because I'm not gonna be the the only one using it and I can't do it off my pc because i dont have an Ethernet port in my room

External HDD.
Wifi is fine, its just a bit iffy sometimes...
Normally people keep the videos and photos on their phone until they're ready to offload to a computer like once a week at most, although I don't fully understand the situation youre in. If you really want to go with a file server on 24/7, the hardware doesnt matter for the most part other than the drives. Have a separate OS drive for FreeNAS (assuming you want it to act as a NAS) and then a 1TB or whatever for storage purposes.
