new drive without package: return it?

Go to solution Solved by Pumbaa,

ok, these are only soft errors and it seems to be normal. The disk has no failure and ECC is doing its job.

This is a 3 TB mechanical drive from Seagate, the model is ST3000DM007-1WY10G.

hello,

I bought a new drive today. The drive is sold as new. In the store I asked why it has no packaging and the seller told me he only used it once to make a system backup. He showed me in the store the drive has a operation lifetime of 1 hour, which is true.

I mounted the drive, deleted the partition table and formated 1 partition EXT4. Then I verified s.m.a.r.t, it has issues of type Old_age and Pre-fail.

Then, I copied a couple of large files to the partition, the error rates increased every time.

here the test result, left: before, right: after

1. is it normal for a brand new drive to have Old_age and Pre-fail issues?

2. should I run some tests?

3. should I return the disk?

thank you
