Ryzen 3000 able to work without BIOS update?

Some background info, my friend is getting a new PC soon. We both aren't very tech savvy so we would love the help of anyone who is knowledgeable. He wants to get a Ryzen 3000 series CPU. However, the X570 motherboards were too expensive for his likings. He heard that with a BIOS update, a X470 motherboard will work with the CPU. However, he does not have another CPU that uses the AM4 socket. My question would be, can we just boot without updating the bios, and if so, what do we lose out of not updating?

If it's already updated, yeah. But you will need it. You won't post without it.

AMD will send you a boot kit for free if you ask them. Or go to a computer shop and ask them to update it.
