Hello everyone.

I've built several computers over the years, but never a storage build.

I want to build a FreeNAS server that i can setup and have my whole family, wherever they are, be able to access and contribute to. Like family photos, videos, etc etc.

Few things i need to know:

1 - which MoBo type would be best? Workstation, server, or normal ATX

2 - Dual or Single CPU? (i'm guessing a high core/thread cpu would be best either way)

3 - would connection speed be a major factor? I mean as long as they can connect to it and do whatever, idt it would matter.(long as they don't have dial-up lol)

I do plan on doing either an AIO or custom loop. Not sure yet. The case i will be using for this is a Lian Li PC-P80. Lots of 5.25 bays for conversion trays into SSD slots.

Any other tips, hints, etc..feel free to comment them.

1. Take a normal consumer board but watch out for the needed sata slots. Most boards have 6 out of the box, some 8. If you need more you need pcie cards.

2. Single ofc and if it's only storage and no encoding for plex or codi then a dual core is fine.

3. It will probably be bound to 1gbit in your local network and outside to the speed of your internet connection.

Do NOT get either aio nor custom loop! These things can fail and then destroy all your stuff/files. Just get an air cooler.

Also: a NAS does not replace backups. Not even a raidz3 or whatever can stop a lightning bold running through the PC.
