I won an optane 905p SSD (I believe it's this one) from a giveaway and from searching online, I don't think there would be an issue using it as my primary boot drive once I receive it (could sell it, but don't know how easy that would be).

I know that the optane memory variant from Intel has a CPU requirement of 7th gen and up but I don't think that's the case for their SSDs.

Could there be an incompatibility issue?

  • CPU: i5-6600k
  • Motherboard: MSI Z170A Gaming M3

Are you certain it's the 2.5" U.2 drive, or could it be the native PCIe card drive? Or even just the M.2 drive? Will make a HUGE difference in the ability to connect to the system.

The picture they showed on the giveaway appears to be the 2.5" version and I couldn't find any other specifications. I realize now that I'd probably have to buy an adapter to connect onto the m.2 slot on my motherboard if I use it.

If it is the U.2 drive, I would absolutely sell it. It's a very commercial type product, and you could probably get $800-900 US for a sealed box one pretty easily on Ebay or locally depending on where you are. Then buy an Intel 660P 1TB or Samsung 970 Evo 1TB for $100-200 and chuck the rest of the money into more substantial upgrades. You could get a lot done on your system with the extra $700.

Yea, I definitely was thinking about selling it but this might take a while. Going to have to travel back to school soon too so not much time left. Not sure if I want to deal with ebay.

I would keep it and get the u.2 to m.2 adapter.

If your MB chipset supports booting from nvme is another issue

Booting from nvme shouldn't be an issue. I had a m.2 nvme ssd on the board before.

I'm just hoping there's no compatibility issue but I guess since it's a normal storage device it'll be fine...
