I am currently helping my dad replace two Dell R710's basically running as a Data inspector for network traffic. They run rather quiet so I believe they are not being pushed but they take up a lot of space and they sit next to him running hot.

My idea is to replace them with an AMD 3700x w/ ASUS' Workstation x570 board using 64gb of ECC ram. This machine will run 1 VM on each NAS 480gb SSD (Minimum is 250gb) with an M.2 SSD with a current total of 2 VM's with the max of 4 VM's down the line. Willl likely throw in a GTX 1050ti I might have lying around as a just in case but will likely be RDP'd to.

Build (What's not mentioned in that list is the Case. Looking at the Phanteks Eclipse P350x @ $69.99 on Amazon. NAS SSD's are $249.98 for two):

The two questions I have are:

1: Do you believe this machine will be sustainable for 10ish years?

2: Should I consider a CPU/Mobo that supports Quad Channel ECC Memory?

Quad-channel is Threadripper/Intel HEDT territory, unless you have a very generous budget I don't think that is a good idea

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600  Heatsink: ID-Cooling Frostflow X GPU: Zotac GTX 1060 Mini 6GB RAM: KLEVV Bolt 3600Mhz (2x8GB) Mobo: ASUS B550-F ROG Strix (Wifi)  Case: Fractal Design Meshify C PSU: Deepcool DQ-M-V2L

the motherboard you've selected costs more than the cpu you've selected. You really aren't even using any of that boards feature so a board 1/3 the cost would be very similar.

I would only trust server hardware with a decade of use rather than consumer hardware. server hardware is expected to run constantly for a decade. consumer hardware is made to break when the warranty is up.

Corsair RMx psu are a touch quieter and don't have the concern of the Focus Plus higher than normal over power protection settings.

I'd suggest a non windowed case. Something like the Fractal Design Define C or Meshify C, or Corsair Carbide 275Q.

How did you verify memory compatibility?

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
