Hello all,

So just bought an SSD for my "ancient" pc that I use for streaming only, as it's my second pc its not a major issue if its slow, but the CrystalDiskMark benchmark has really surprised me.  This is with a brand new PNY SSD 240GB.  Not the best brand, but I did expect slightly more than this.

I'm not to clued up with older SATA limitations, which is what I'm assuming it is, so I thought I'd ask you guys.

Some specs below,  I did say it was ancient,  cost me nothing and runs fairly quick.

original sata has a limitation of around 100 to 150 mbs

sata II goes up to 300 more or less, only sata III goes almost to 550mbs

from those specs seems to be from 2010 and should have sata II speeds

could you check if pny has a tool to update the firmware on that ssd?

Thanks,  just checked and they do have a firmware tool, it isn't detecting my drive though.  It displays "Can't detect any SATA device."  Not sure if that's an incompatibility issue.  It's worth noting though windows is currently on and booting from this SSD and the system can see it.

What motherboard are you using?

From the looks of it, the SSD is limited to SATA I speeds.

Check the BIOS for any settings that:

  • Switch the SATA ports to run at IDE or AHCI mode -- you want it to be on the AHCI setting
  • Selects the SATA port speed (e.g. SATA I or SATA II)

I've had a look in the BIOS and there is an option for "SATA mode" and IDE is selected, it's greyed out though so I can't change the selection.  So just assuming its to old to really benefit from the SSD.  Not a problem though, I'll just leave it in and keep it as a spare should I need it.

Thanks for the help everyone, older versions of SATA are not something I'm familiar with so it has been good to learn a few things.

I was able to drill down to find it is a MSi made motherboard.

Model Number MS-7388 ... which correlates to MSi K9A2 CF motherboard.

That matches up with the CPU-Z 'mainboard' screenshot indicating it is a 790X chipset based motherboard.

The four SATA ports should be SATA II compliant.

OEM BIOS tends to be "locked down" , usually because of a custom Acer / DELL / HP BIOS.

THAT SAID, if you want to be take the CHANCE, you COULD try one of the non-OEM BIOS MSi provides.

Latest one being 1.D, with release date 2010-09-20.

Thanks for the hard work, I'm not sure this is a chance I'm willing to take.  The system is working fine for what I'll be using it for.  It would be good to get the SATA II speeds but, not to important.

Thanks
