$200 Android Phone

Aereldor

After 2 years of use, my S7 edge kicked the bucket and it'll cost too much to fix. I replaced it with a Moto G7 power but I'm returning that since it has a bunch of manufacturer defects.

I really don't want to spend more than $200

Essential features

  • Good battery life
  • Some degree of water resistance
  • Good durability, even though I'm going to put it in an otterbox
  • A good camera

I'm currently considering a manufacturer refurbished Galaxy S7. It's $200 and comes with a 1 year warranty.

It wasn't. I didn't think that was that important since most of those water resistance ratings are valid for only a short time or until the first drop.

Sounds alright, what are the improvements? I don't care about how fast the phone is, just primarily that it's durable

Budget phones these days just as good and as fast as the S7 generations. With more battery capacity.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 is the king of the budget camera with its 48mp sony sensor, the difference with flagship camera that it doesn't have optical stabilizers (although the electronic one is good enough).

If you're a samsung fan, for that money an A50 phone is great, it has a wideangle cam (very usefull), in display fingerprint and an amoled display.

Getting a new phone is a peace of mind than a 3-4 year old flagship.

About water resistance, basically you can dunk these phones in a shallow water (for a short time) without any problems as most of the body is glue shut. And some cases have port plug that will protect the extra openings. Getting certifications means more cost to the company, which these budget phone certainly don't need.

  1. Looks good, I'm just a little iffy with Xiaomi stuff.

  2. Do you reckon the A50 is a suitable comparison to the S7? It will cost me $50 more but I'll get it brand new.

  3. Yeah, and I already liked the 2-3 day battery on the Moto G7 Power, it just has too many defects and doesn't run apple music properly, which is a big deal for me (professional musician, library of 11,000 songs, most of which I like to keep offline)

  4. That's a relief to hear, but it seems to vary from model to model. I don't plan on dropping the phone into any swimming pools, I just don't want an accidental drop into a sink or splatter from rain/spills to cause any damage.

    OK

As far as i know, the CPU is just as good, the SD 820 has 130K antutu score, the Exynos 9610 has around 126K. Which is not that big of a difference. You'll be surprise how much better these budget phones today. Plus it supports the latest Android. The S7 is unlikely to have Android Pie without installing custom rom.
The camera obviously better. And the RAM and storage is pretty much the same, from 4gb/64gb to 6gb/128gb.
The screen is a downgrade from 2K resolution to 1080p, but you might not notice the difference.

Haven't had any problems with A50 so far (my wife's phone), samsung's updates is going fine. Don't know about apple music.
It also support expansion slots up to 1TB if the internals is not enough and dual sim cards.

Yeah, modern phones (with non replaceable batteries) are virtually splash proof, but i don't know if it can widthstand a plunge to a deep pool. Even if it happens, take it out immediately and put it in a rice bath for a day, it should be working again.

Get the A50 or Redmi Note 7 Pro or Realme X or Oppo Reno Z, if you are willing to break your initial $200 budget. They are all in the same price segment and the mid range phones this year have been extremely competitive (as long as you know how to identify them)

Realme X is a candidate to replace my Redmi Note 5 pro, but since i used my wife A50 ultra wide angle camera, i'm reconsidering.

The wide angle can capture dramatic shot, much like a 12mm on a full frame camera (borderline fisheye).

I don't use the camera that much, I just need something reliable since I use it to record performances and lessons (I'm a musician and music student). I'd definitely appreciate a wideangle lens to make things easier in crowded venues, but a clip-on would probably achieve the same result.

I don't care about the CPU, GPU, Display- none of that. I care about battery life, durability, and a decent enough camera. I understand guaranteed water-resistance is tricky with manufacturers, but I'd prefer water damage to be covered by the warranty since every bricked phone I've seen was from water damage.

And perhaps most importantly, I care about quality control. I've had too much shit fail on me and I don't want to worry about repairs and replacements.
